Sights in and around Marling: explore the Meran area all year round

Rooted in beauty – explore the best sights

Autumn gold, summer green, spring pink or winter blue – which is your favourite colour? We love them all, so instead of choosing, we simply stay open 365 days a year! This way, sometimes you can see the snowy peaks, sometimes the apple and cherry trees blossoming… and sometimes, both at the same time! Marling is a perfect year-round base for exploring the Meran area and appreciating its multifaceted beauty as it changes with the seasons. Many attractions are just a few minutes away, and there’s a cycle path running right past our farm. The bus stop and train station are within walking distance, too.

Spring

When nature reawakens after its wintry slumber, the blossoming apple trees around Marling are a sight to behold. The mild temperatures are perfect for the first long walks and hikes of the year. One of the most beloved local routes starts right on our doorstep: the Marling Waalweg. This scenic trail winds its way through orchards and vineyards, following the course of ancient irrigation channels. Stunning views of Meran and the surrounding mountains open up at every turn. Another spring sight you don’t want to miss are the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle: with over 80 garden landscapes featuring plants from all over the world, Mediterranean-style terraces and spectacular vantage points, you’re in for an experience that will delight all the senses. If you visit in spring, you will also find the Tappeinerweg promenade in Meran in full bloom. Palm trees, Mediterranean plants and views of the mountains and the spa town make it one of the most beautiful footpaths in the area. If you’d rather stay in Marling and get acquainted with the local wine culture, follow the WineCulturePath and you’ll learn interesting facts about viticulture, our landscape and the history of the region.

Summer

If you’re visiting us in summer, the water and the mountains are your best friends! For example, you can take the cable car to the Vigiljoch – a car-free outdoor area where you can explore quiet woodland and alpine pastures and enjoy wonderful scenery. The Meran 2000 area is another great destination offering hiking trails, restaurants and options for both families and sports enthusiasts. If you’d rather put your feet up and just take in the view, head to the famous Knottnkino in Vöran. It’s a unique vantage point located on Mt. Rotsteinkogel, commanding an unobstructed view of the Etschtal valley. Sit on the wooden loungers and enjoy the natural spectacle before you!

Speaking of natural wonders… the Partschins Waterfall in the Vinschgau valley is the perfect destination on a hot summer day. It’s one of South Tyrol’s most scenic waterfalls. And if you enjoy staying active on holiday, you’ll find several tennis courts nearby where you can enjoy a game or two, with South Tyrol’s beautiful mountain scenery as your backdrop.

Autumn

We’ll let you in on a little secret: this somewhat underrated season is actually our absolute favourite! Because things cool off a bit in autumn, making way for a cosy, feel-good atmosphere. The vineyards bathed in gold, the colourful foliage, the clear, far-reaching views… and the grape harvest. It’s also the perfect season for hiking, walking and cycling! From leisurely walks to challenging high-altitude hikes, the Meran region offers something for every taste and fitness level, with spectacular autumn views. Visit one of the many wine taverns and farm shops around Marling for a foray into our local seasonal cuisine, and don’t miss the chance to participate in a traditional Törggelen – think new vintages, chestnuts and regional specialities enjoyed in good company. It’s one of the most beloved South Tyrolean traditions… and with good reason!

Winter

Things tend to get quieter in and around Marling during wintertime. Down in the valley, the winter sun still makes it pleasant to be outdoors, while up in the mountains the snow beckons... The Meran 2000 ski resort, for example, offers activities for the whole family, from skiing and tobogganing to leisurely winter walks. During Advent, we recommend visiting one of the many traditional Christmas markets. Whether you choose the two large ones in Bozen and Meran or the many smaller markets in the surrounding villages, you can browse for local crafts and South Tyrolean specialities in a magical atmosphere.

Other must-sees for your holiday bucket list

Enjoy a taste of South Tyrolean ‘dolce vita’ following in Sisi’s footsteps – this legendary Empress of Austria loved a stroll along the Passer Promenade in Meran. While you’re there, you can round off the experience with a visit to the historic arcades, or with a fine aperitif in the historical centre of the spa town.

Culture vultures can look forward to a rich heritage with castles, museums and more. From its scenic location high above Meran, Tyrol Castle offers fascinating insights into local history. Lebenberg Castle near Tscherms – just round the corner from us – makes for an interesting outing, too. As for museums, you will be spoilt for choice: Palais Mamming, South Tyrol’s oldest municipal museum, and the Kunsthaus Meran art museum are just two of the many options in the Meran area.

A couple more tips: the Marling sports area features a tennis court open all year round. And if you appreciate good wine, the Meran Winery with its panoramic wine shop is practically on our doorstep.
